In this full time position of **Security Officer Tactical K9 Handler** , your work hours will be - a 4hr shift on Wednesdays, 12 hour shifts on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and/or Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, with the understanding the hours may vary. As an Officer, you may also be required to work TAC officer shifts or special assignments valley-wide. The work shift is patrolling the facilities urgent cares and clinics with some work at the area hospitals with a trained canine (K9); assisting with the welfare and safety of personnel, visitors, and patients.

Tactical Officers are specialized security officers with advanced training in de-escalation techniques, advanced non-lethal defensive systems, defensive tactics, and critical thinking skills.

**MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR UPCOMING PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT TEST! Successful candidates will also be physically fit and able to maintain sufficient physical fitness to successfully pass the** upcoming Cooper Institute Physical Fitness Assessment Test **(1.5 mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, vertical jump, and 300 meter run) before selection to the Tactical Officer Certification Course and on a bi-annual basis to retain employment in the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU).**

This team works 12 hour shifts (for both days and nights), a 18%-night shift differential when you work a minimum of 2 hours in the night shift “window” which is 7pm to 7am.

**DAY SHIFTS:**

**Shift A: (Sun-Wed) Sun - Tues 6 am-6 pm, then ½ Wed 6 am- 12 noon**

**Shift B: (Wed-Sat) ½ Wed - 12 noon-6pm, then Th- Sat 6 am-6 pm**

**NIGHT SHIFTS:**

**Shift C:(Sun-Wed) Sun - Tues 6pm-6am, then ½ Wed (6 pm- 12 midnight)**

**Shift D: (Wed-Sat) ½ Wed 12 midnight - 6 am, then Thur- Sat 6pm-6am**

POSITION SUMMARY

This position patrols the facilities and grounds with a trained (K9); assists with the welfare and safety of personnel and patients; investigates critical incidents; assists employees, patients, and visitors; interfaces with emergency response agencies, secures doors, monitors parking and traffic control. Performs assigned security duties promptly and accurately. The officer and K9 work as a team and support security duties by using the K9 for searching, crowd control, detecting explosives, and as a deterrent for violent confrontation through the K9's presence or physical abilities. The Tactical K9 Handler will serve as first responders in the Emergency Department to the most violent and dangerous security incidents occurring throughout the facility and the campus; managing the security response in coordination with the Tactical Officer to the violent incidents involving non-patients, and serving as primary liaison with law enforcement during critical incidents.

CORE FUNCTIONS

1. Exhibits excellent interpersonal skills and be customer service oriented in all contacts with patients, visitors and staff.

2. Responds to all emergency codes for assistance and control. As a team, the officer and K9 patrols and inspects facility and grounds frequently to assist in maintaining a safer and more secure environment. Assists employees with security related matters, mediate disputes, conduct interviews, conduct searches, enforces parking regulations and traffic control. Serves as a security subject matter expert.

3. Provide daily care of the K9 to include feeding, exercising, grooming, medical care, and cleaning of the K9’s kennel. Keep the K9 physically fit through training and exercise. Keep the K9 at an acceptable level of readiness to be able to pass K9 evaluations. May perform public demonstrations as a K9 team. Maintains accurate K9 training logs and monthly activities.

4. Assists medical staff in restraining and handling troubled/combative patients. Ensures security policies are being followed. Patrols unoccupied areas and sets the alarms when appropriate. Locks and unlocks facility doors at prescribed times. Conducts money pick-ups from departments, logs pick-ups and successfully delivers the contents to the appropriate destination department. Releases bodies from the morgue, ensuring that all paperwork is complete. Checks alarms to ensure they are in proper working order. Escorts patients, visitors and employees when required for security purposes. Participates in security lead training designed for staff.

5. Maintains current knowledge of applicable laws and regulations. Performs “citizen arrest” and demonstrate critical thinking skills during extremely stressful situations as needed.

6. Appropriately and effectively utilizes assigned non-lethal weapons in accordance with policy and training.

7. Investigates and completes written reports of complaints, critical security incidents and unusual activities involving patients, employees and visitors. Maintains an accurate log of all relevant security activities during each shift. Based on area of assignment may assist in the maintenance and preservation of confidential health documents including scanning into electronic patient health information systems.

8. Professionally testifies in criminal court, state hearings and review boards when required.

9. Position reports directly to the Associate Manager, Tactical Operations Unit (TOU), or OIC in their absence. This position interacts internally with staff, physicians, visitors, volunteers and patients. External customers are law enforcement agencies and emergency service agencies. The position is system wide and officers may be assigned to work at any facility as needed. This position will provide guidance and direction to staff, visitors and patients during a security emergency. This position will be required to proactively identify, deter and respond to security incidents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge. Must maintain required security certifications. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.

Must possess strong knowledge and understanding of security as normally obtained by a minimum of three years law enforcement, military experience or seven years of hospital security experience.

Must possess the ability to make accurate observations and exercise good independent judgment in a variety of situations (including emergencies). Must demonstrate the ability to write comprehensive security reports. Must successfully complete all required security departmental training, including department specific annual training and mandatory training as assigned. Must successfully complete Banner Health Basic Officer Academy, Banner Health Tactical Officer Academy, and all requirements (both physical and training) of being both a K9 Handler and a Tactical Officer. Must present a professional appearance and demeanor at all times and must possess strong verbal communications skills. Must qualify and maintain proficiency with assigned non-lethal weapons. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform physical requirements of the position. Capabilities will be demonstrated through the successful completion of similarly related skills testing. Employees hired on or after January 1, 2019 will need to successfully demonstrate the physical requirements before starting in the role. Employees hired before January 1, 2019 must be able to successfully demonstrate the physical requirements by December 31, 2019. If upon initial evaluation, an employee is unable to successfully demonstrate the physical requirements, there will be a quarterly assessment administered. This physical skills assessment will then be conducted on an annual basis and employees must successfully meet the requirements to remain in role.

Requires completion of a Banner Health approved K9 training program within three months of hire in an eligible or required position. Requires National Police Canine Association (NPCA) Handler Certification within 12 months of hire in an eligible or required position. Must certify annually. Must have proper facilities at place of residence and transportation to ensure the health and well-being of the K9, including room to store a kennel.

Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain the card for the duration of their employment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Prefer prior law enforcement, military, Corrections, healthcare or advance security experience.

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
